Title of This Year’s Project: Fields for Flight: Effects of Magnetic Fields on Butterfly Navigation
Brief Synopsis of your Purpose and Research Goals for your project: the title explains a lot of it in a nutshell, i'm experimenting with butterfly navigation, specifically the painted lady butterfly, which migrate thousands of miles north and south. I knew that monarchs use an internal compass to migrate, so i wondered if these little guys did too, and if they react non- natural magnetic fields, I.E., magnets. I also wan’t to test whether or not their early development as caterpillars effect their adult navigation skills.
What interested you in your chosen topic of research? i was curious if these guys used the exact same method to tell north from south that monarchs do, and if they react to stronger and non- natural magnetic fields, and also, if their early development as caterpillars effected all of this.
